)”Our Family Wedding” is a perfectly good idea for a comedy: A wedding between a Mexican-American woman and an African-American man leads to culture clash. The film, unfortunately, deals with the situation at the level of a middling sitcom. You almost miss the laugh track.

Difficult problems are sidestepped, arguments are overacted, and there are three food fights involving wedding cakes. Well, two, actually, and the destruction of a third cake.
At the center of the wedding are Lucia Ramirez (America Ferrera), a former law student at Columbia, and Marcus Boyd (Lance Gross), a Columbia med-school graduate. The young couple plan to move to Laos, where he will work with Doctors Without Borders.
They’ve been living together in New York but keeping it a secret from her parents because her mom, Sonia (Diana Maria Riva), expects her to remain a virgin before marriage, and her father, Miguel (Carlos Mencia), would be crushed if he learned she has dropped out of law school. In a plot twist of startling originality, she is not pregnant.
A slimmed-down Forest Whitaker plays Marcus’ father, Brad, a popular Los Angeles all-night DJ. He’s doing all right and inhabits a huge house in the hills with a pool, stairs leading to a terrace and a lawn big enough to hold a wedding party. Plus his ride is a Jaguar. Not bad for an all-night DJ.
Miguel is also well off, with the daughter at Columbia, the big, luxurious house and the passion for restoring classic cars. He owns a towing service, which is how he and Brad have a meet-cute: All his drivers call in sick. Miguel fills in, and he and Brad meet when he tows the Jag.
The dads meet again at dinner, when their children pop the news. Cue the screaming insults; they wind up shaking each other by the throat.
All of the family difficulties seem trumped-up.

Four-time champion Jimmie Johnson’s image isn’t the primary one being used to promote this weekend’s NASCAR races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Neither is Kyle Busch’s , even though the Las Vegan won the NASCAR Sprint Cup race a year ago.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.? Tony Stewart? Not much of a sign of either even though they’re America’s most popular drivers.

The face the speedway hoped would launch the sale of thousands of tickets belongs to Danica Patrick, the first woman to win an IndyCar race and the most popular pin-up in racing history.

The strategy has worked.

Speedway president Chris Powell said this week that he estimates Patrick has been responsible for selling upward of 15,000 tickets for today’s Sam’s Town 300.

When the 27-year-old starts NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide series race today at 1:30 p.m. — weather permitting — she won’t even be the first woman to have competed in the race.

Patty Moise raced in the first Nationwide race at Las Vegas in 1998 when it was called the Busch Series. In 2002, Shawna Robinson became the only woman to compete at the track in the Cup series.

Neither had the hype of Patrick. Her fans are young and old, male and female.

Kingman, Ariz., residents Herb and Millie Ballard were at the speedway two weeks ago to buy a Patrick souvenir T-shirt and the shirts weren’t hard to find: They were front and center in the gift shop.

"I saw her in the races at Daytona and I just liked her," said Millie, 65. "She just stands out."

Ballard’s husband, a longtime fan of Johnson and NASCAR, knows women have raced before in NASCAR but said "No one ever promoted them so we could get to know them."

The ESPN2 telecast of Patrick’s Feb. 13 Nationwide debut drew an average of 4.2 million viewers, which was a record for the series and a 33 percent increase over the flights from Longreach to Melbourne (All Airports) previous year’s audience, according to the network.

Late last year, Alfa Romeo previewed the all-new Giulietta ahead of its reveal at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. While the five-door hatch is enough to make Stateside consumers weak in the knees – particularly in Quadrifoglio Verde trim – the impact in the U.S. figures to be much more substantial.

According to a new report by Automotive News, the underpinnings of the Giulietta are set to proliferate throughout Fiat’s range in the coming years, and of the one million vehicles the automaker plans to build off the new architecture annually, the Chrysler group will account for around 700,000.

Fiat and Chrysler are currently working on a widened version of the platform – appropriately dubbed “Compact Wide” – and seven new models for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep will use the new underpinnings, including the replacement for the Chrysler PT Cruiser and Dodge Caliber in 2012. And judging by Fiat’s description, it’s a helluva platform.

Aimed to compete with the new Audi A1 and BMW 1 Series, the platform uses 84 percent high and ultrahigh strength steel, a McPherson front and a dual-link rear suspension, both of which will use aluminum components (front and rear arms, along with the crossmember).

The platform comes in around 10 percent lighter than its predecessor thanks to the use of aluminum and magnesium, and is designed to fit a transverse engine and can be adapted for either front- or all-wheel drive applications.

On a related side note, during last week’s Economic Club of Chicago luncheon in which Ralph Gilles, Dodge CEO and Chrysler Group design head, dropped a a handful of interesting tidbits about the future of the automaker, he also showed a few teasers of upcoming products. Stimulus checks and cash-for-clunkers programs are a few of the recent programs that have highlighted this thinking. Ultimately, though it is investments in capital goods and services that have a profound effect on the long-term productivity and welfare of a people.Consumer purchases such as going to the movies, going out for Chinese food or buying a big screen HDTV will do very little for increasing a person’s ability to be more efficient, be more productive or make more goods. Tools like computers, tractors, power drills and education can have a profound impact. Now as any college student knows, a computer can be used to for playing games and doing research, so the lines can be blurred. And there is nothing wrong with enjoying life a little or seeing a movie. If a new car allows you to better serve clients or deliver goods to customers, it becomes a powerful capital asset, but many times they are not used in this way.
Ultimately, investments in our future need to made to make us more effective and more productive. If we fail to make those investments, it can have a negative effective on our future lifestyles and those of the next generation. Each year, society has only a limited amount of time, money and resources; we can spend them on consumable products like vacations that have a limited return or invest them in long-term assets like roads, equipment, computer software and training that will allow us to be more efficient and productive in the future. While consumer spending is a big indicator of how people feel about the economy, the alternative of saving and investing for the future is really critical and often ignored.
